After months of speculation over a permanent transfer, Rangers have officially lost out on the signing of Jason Cummings. The 22-year-old had spent a brief loan spell at the Ibrox last season but has been shifted out to Peterborough United on loan by Nottingham Forest for the upcoming 2018/19 campaign. The Light Blues have already made provisions in Umar Sadiq but Steven Gerrard plans to bolster the squad further. The Nigerian striker has been brought out on a loan agreement from AS Roma for the following season. However, acquiring a third option will only help proceedings, especially if the Gers are to really challenge Celtic for major honours. With their pursuit of Jason Cummings now a lost cause, here are a few players Gerrard should consider as an alternative to the 22-year-old. Jermain Defoe The veteran forward still has another season left on his Bournemouth contract but Eddie Howe might agree to sell for other younger replacements. Even at his age, Defoe is a prolific goalscorer who managed to grab 4 goals and 1 assist in 26 games for the Cherries last term, the majority of them as a substitute. He netted the ball on 37 occasions in 93 appearances for Sunderland and played a key role in saving them from relegation in the 2015/16 season. The 57-cap England international might not have the athletic prowess of his younger self but he is still a lethal presence inside the opposition box. The former Tottenham Hotspur striker has racked up 163 goals in close to 500 appearances in the Premier League. With the amount of experience Defoe has in the English top-flight, he certainly could be a leading figure in the Gers ranks. Kyle Lafferty He plies his trade for Hearts of Midlothian FC and is about to enter the final 12 months of his contract. The 30-year-old previously spent time with Rangers between the years of 2008 and 2012, making 134 appearances and scoring 36 goals in that period. Despite enjoying such a lucrative period at the Ibrox, Lafferty was forced to object against a trade and had to end his association with the club. However, with Gerrard taking over the Light Blues, there might be the possibility of a prodigious return could be facilitated.
