Personalities at talkSPORT appear to be on an eternal mission to belittle Scottish football this summer, aiming their latest ridiculous comments at the size of Rangers and the pressure that manager Steven Gerrard is under. Earlier this week, Jim White angered Aberdeen and wider Scottish football fans in general by suggesting that the sale of Adam Rooney was a sign of the dwindling status of the game north of the border, not taking into account that he was no longer first-choice at Pittodrie and scored only 8 goals last season. Now his colleague Andy Goldstein has taken aim at Rangers, suggesting that the Ibrox side are not a big club outside of Scotland’s borders and that the pressure facing Steven Gerrard is less than that of English Championship managers like Steve Bruce. As quoted by The Scottish Sun, the radio host said: Rangers are not a massive club outside of Scotland. You know that and I know that. There’s pressure at every club in every job. But there’s less pressure, in my opinion, on Gerrard and Rangers than there would be Steve Bruce and Villa. The more money involved the more pressure, there’s more pressure in a manager trying to get his club out of the Championship and into the Premier League than there is a manager second place in the SPL. That is a fact. The English radio station appears to be obsessed with Scottish football and clubs such as Rangers recently, surely that is a sign in itself that football up here is bigger and more relevant than they suggest. Shouldn’t they be focusing on Manchester United’s and Chelsea’s preparations ahead of the new season? Everyone who follows Rangers knows the size of the club and the passion supporters from countries all over the world have for the Ibrox side and if these no marks wants to keep trying to make themselves relevant with pot shots, then let them, it’s only generating ridicule. What do you make of Goldstein’s comments? Let us know in the comments below…
