Ex-Rangers star Kirk Broadfoot says Steven Gerrard’s side are becoming a mirror image of Walter Smith’s team

KIRK BROADFOOT says Steven Gerrard’s Gers are becoming a mirror image of the Walter Smith team who swept all before them. Killie defender Broadfoot was part of the Smith side who won three straight Premiership titles, and reached the Uefa Cup Final in 2008. Broadfoot said: “I’ve mates and cousins who are season-ticket holders at Ibrox, and they say they see a Walter Smith team. “I don’t know much about some of the new signings, but I played against Connor Goldson when he was at Brighton, and he was fantastic. “He is a good signing, and obviously I know Greegsy too. “You can see those comparisons to a Smith team — hard to beat, staying in games, and then nicking 1-0 wins.” Kilmarnock enjoyed a terrific record against both sides of the Old Firm last season. But Broadfoot expects a far tougher test from Rangers at Rugby Park today. Steven Gerrard has been praised for his impressive start at the GersWillie Vass Broadfoot added: “Without being disrespectful they are a much harder proposition to play now. “You can see they are better organised and they stay in games. “Last year they were probably on top in a lot of games, and they would lose a goal and then another — the way they did down here. RACE AGAINST TIME Rangers’ Europa League rivals FC Ufa could sensationally have to FORFEIT their tie with Gers “Rangers were 1-0 up and they should have seen the game out, and they ended up losing 2-1.” While Broadfoot admits he has been impressed by Gerrard, he wouldn’t swap Killie boss Steve Clarke for anyone. Broadfoot said: “The way the manager came in we felt we could beat anyone — Rangers or Celtic, and we had good records against them both.
