Sky Sports pundit and commentator Ian Crocker says he is expecting great things from Rangers midfielder Scott Arfield this season as he predicts the season opener against Aberdeen. $bp(“Brid_32517474”, {“id”:“13259”,“width”:“16”,“height”:“9”,“video”:“274134”}); The former Burnley man put pen to paper as one of Steven Gerrard’s first signings at Ibrox, arriving on a free transfer after his contract with the Premier League side expired. The 29-year-old has managed to make just one appearance during the Europa League qualifiers thanks to injury, but despite that Crocker says he is expecting the Canada international to bring plenty to the Gers’ midfield, with the Premiership season kicking off on Sunday. Predicting a 2-1 win for the Light Blues away at Aberdeen, he wrote on Sky Sports’ website: “Rangers have a lot more strength and aggression. “Having followed Scott Arfield’s career closely he won’t be getting pushed about either. Should bring a lot to the team and has a goal in him. “It will be fascinating to see how the manager and his many signings settle in. A testing run of early away games will tell them and us more.” Opinion Rangers have not been given an easy opener to their new season, and after facing the likes of Osijek in the Europa League this will be a much more accurate benchmark for how the fresh looking squad are set to perform. Aberdeen finished second ahead of the Gers last season and so if Gerrard’s men can go toe-to-toe with them, they will know they are on the right track. A defeat is not the end of the world, especially with a Europa League qualifier on Thursday, but they really should be aiming for no less than a draw. As for Arfield, he was, and perhaps still is, the biggest coup for the Light Blues, taking him from the Premier League back to Scotland’s top flight, and if he can bring what he learned in England to Ibrox, the Gers have a serious talent on their hands. Hopefully his early injury blow is just something minor and will not be recurrent throughout his time at the club, but at 29, those sort of setbacks to begin to creep in.
